Gas suppliers and the taxpayer

We learnt recently that funding the gas suppliers who have taken on customers from collapsed energy companies will be costing us, the taxpayer, the eye-watering sum of £2.4 billion for doing so.

Some thirty such companies have gone bust since 2021 and it clearly highlights, yet again, the sheer stupidity and pointlessness of so many privatisations of national bodies in the name of some short-sighted, free market ideology.

Some time ago I posed a question which I will repeat once more – can anyone point to a privatisation that has actually gone well and benefitted the public?
