Motion for the Ocean

From Councillor Peter Christie’s weekly column:

Councillor Claire Hodson recently presented the ‘Motion for the Ocean’ to Torridge which passed unanimously as it is aimed at producing a ‘clean, healthy and productive ocean’ around our coastline.

This is obviously a ‘good thing’ of course but we are all aware that South West Water continues to dump sewage into the sea at times of peak flow.

Over the years I have asked what is the carrying capacity of the Cornborough sewage plant – the one that handles Bideford’s waste. Sadly now that SWW is a private company they are under no necessity to answer and so they haven’t but, given the massive number of houses that have been awarded planning permission in Bideford and Northam, one has to wonder if and when Cornborough is going to be ‘full’ and sewage discharges to the sea inevitably become more common.
