The Local Government Association which acts for all councils has just published the results of a lengthy questionnaire on coastal landfill sites – with the old civic dump on Northam Burrows quoted as an example of these ‘hidden, silent, ticking time bombs’.
The report contains a wealth of material on the problems of such sites especially given the rise in sea level from man-made climate change. Unfortunately one sentence sums up the problem ‘we still do not have a sustainable way of dealing with these sites as they face the increasing risk of flooding and/or erosion.’
Given this one has to wonder if Torridge and the county council will ever be able to come up with a workable solution.
